APSO 2nd Annual Joint Conference, Bangkok 2022

APSO 2nd Annual Joint Conference, Bangkok 2022

As Thailand and Singapore lead the post-pandemic reopening of borders in Southeast Asia, the third quarter of 2022 began to see a return of in-person dental conferences in the region. Asia Pacific Society of Osseointegration (APSO), an affiliate of the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) organised their 2nd annual joint conference at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, Bangkok on the 25-26th August 2022.

The theme of the conference was “Implant Dentistry: Past, Present & Future”, a hybrid event which drew renowned speakers including Professor Clark Stanford, the immediate past president of AO and director of AO Professor Joseph Kan. The event also saw other prominent speakers from the region, including China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia.

Staying true to its theme, the participants were able to appreciate classic clinical cases with follow-ups of over 20 years, to the latest consolidation of today’s digital technology that has the potential to keep evolving. The event also saw panel-styled discussions with amazing cases on achieving predictable aesthetic outcomes; to dialogues on the controversies of peri-implantitis. Overall, the programme was packed with evidence-based lectures and inspiring new concepts in implant dentistry.

No conference is complete without a Gala Dinner, and the Straumann sponsored event did not disappoint. There were live performances from a local Thai band, and surprise singing and dancing from the participants themselves. The Gala night also saw the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to Emeritus Professor Chew Chong Lin from Singapore, in acknowledgement of his contributions in teaching and research for over 45 years.

It was indeed encouraging to see over a hundred participants from 8 different countries, including a group of Malaysians, several of whom were part of the organising committee. The hybrid style conference of both online and on-site lectures was familiar yet refreshing, a taste of how dental education has evolved through the pandemic, possibly setting the tone for future conferences.

It is reasonable to say that the quality of speakers and level of organisation made this event a true success to any dental implant enthusiast despite one’s experience level and is indeed encouraging to have events of this standard in the region. To cap it all, the committee revealed at the end that the next joint conference would be in none other than the Lion City, Singapore!
